Do not answer from the cabinet’s appearance or the word commercial. The Australian Energy Rating industry guidance lists refrigerated vending machines among the products not covered by the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Refrigerated Cabinets) Determination 2024. The determination gives that exclusion a specific definition.
For an Australian purchase, the useful first step is a scope answer for the actual quoted model. This article explains that question using official sources checked on 9 November 2026. It does not classify a particular WEIMI model or establish an exemption from all Australian requirements.
Section 21(1)(a) excludes refrigerated vending machines from this determination. Section 21(2) defines a refrigerated vending machine as a self-contained refrigerated cabinet designed to accept consumer payments or tokens to dispense pre-packed beverages or foodstuffs, such as cans, bottles or food packets, and storing products between 0°C and +5°C.
Carry all of those elements into the supplier discussion. Ask how the offered configuration is self-contained, how payment or tokens relate to dispensing, which pre-packed goods it is designed to sell and what its designed storage conditions are. Do not reduce the definition to a card reader attached to a refrigerator.
A published adjustable temperature range alone is not a complete classification response. Ask the supplier or responsible Australian reviewer to connect the machine’s design and intended configuration to the legal definition. This is a document review, not advice to change a temperature setting to obtain an exclusion.
A conventional dispenser and a cabinet that customers open to select products can present different facts. If a supplier calls both vending machines, request the basis on which the particular design meets the determination’s wording. Do not infer that every AI fridge is excluded, or that every direct-access cabinet must be registered, from the sales name alone.
The official guidance also describes refrigerated display and storage cabinets that are covered by the determination. Where the quoted configuration does not clearly fit the vending definition, ask the responsible reviewer to identify the applicable product class and any other relevant exclusion. Leave the answer open until the actual product has been assessed.
An exclusion from this determination is not an efficiency rating or a measured electricity figure. A product may still need energy evidence for a tender or operating budget. Our ENERGY STAR model evidence guide discusses a separate certification system; its badge does not answer Australian GEMS scope.
Likewise, the EU energy-label and EPREL check addresses a different framework. Do not use an EU label as proof of Australian registration or assume that another market’s vending category has the same boundary.
The Australian regulator states that refrigerated cabinets covered by this determination do not have to display an Energy Rating Label. It also explains that a voluntary star rating used when offering a covered product must be calculated according to Schedule 5 and recorded through product registration. These statements should not be turned into permission to invent a star rating.
For a covered cabinet, the regulator describes minimum energy performance, testing and marking-plate requirements. Ask for the applicable model file. For a product assessed as outside this determination, retain the reasoned scope response. Neither route by itself resolves electrical safety, food storage suitability or every other market-entry obligation.
Send the full model designation, target Australian installation, intended stock, storage requirements and customer purchase sequence. Ask the supplier to identify the determination considered and explain the basis for inclusion or exclusion. Where the response relies on section 21, request the exact definition and supporting configuration details.
Keep the response with the approved equipment schedule. If the model, cooling arrangement or customer access method changes, ask whether the scope decision needs review. A different cabinet carrying the same brand should not silently inherit the earlier answer.
These are suggested procurement checks, not results from a customer installation. No WEIMI GEMS registration, measured energy saving or complete Australian compliance determination is claimed here. Use the Australian Government Energy Rating refrigerated cabinet guidance and the 2024 determination, particularly section 21. The legislation controls the legal definition; the guidance directs readers to the determination for compliance. Recheck current rules when assessing the actual order.
