Vending Machine Card Reader: Tap First or Select a Product First?

Use the payment sequence as a buying requirement, with three documented Nayax MDB scenarios as examples.

A vending machine with a card reader may ask the customer to tap first or select a product first. The reader's presence does not tell a buyer which sequence the machine will use. Before ordering a cashless vending machine, agree what happens on the machine screen, the payment terminal and the dispensing mechanism in one purchase.

Nayax's official VPOS Media 4 MDB BASIC template guide, reviewed on 8 November 2026, describes three scenarios. They provide useful examples for a purchase discussion. This is a review of that documentation, not a test of a WEIMI integration or instructions to change a live payment account.

Three documented ways to start a transaction

Card first, then choose: Nayax labels its Pre-Selection scenario as MDB Level 1. Its description says the customer taps or inserts a card and then selects a product. The label “Pre-Selection” should therefore not be interpreted on its own as a promise that the customer chooses before presenting a card.

Reserve an amount, then choose: The guide's Pre-Authorization scenario is also described as MDB Level 1. It starts with the card and a fixed reserved amount before product selection. Ask the payment provider to explain the authorised amount, final transaction and customer-visible messages for the proposed configuration. This source does not establish a universal time for a bank to release an unused pending amount.

Choose first, then pay: Nayax describes its MDB Level 3 Always Idle scenario as product-first. The customer selects on the machine and then pays. A buyer seeking this retail-style sequence should name it explicitly rather than request only “contactless payment”.

The terminal model and controller matter

The guide specifically applies to VPOS Media 4 and says MDB is unavailable on VPOS Media 4 Mini and other devices in that family. Do not generalise from the family name, a terminal photograph or a payment logo. Record the exact reader, machine controller, software versions and proposed connection, then have the responsible suppliers confirm the supported combination.

The same source treats BASIC templates as minimum starting configurations and flags inconsistent template tags. This article does not reproduce tags or setting values as a deployment recipe. Ask the provider to confirm its current procedure for the actual device. In the guide, saving configuration to a machine record and sending it to the device are separate steps; a saved dashboard entry alone does not demonstrate that the cabinet is operating with that configuration.

Make the screen instructions match the actual sequence

Specify where the customer first sees the price and what instruction appears before the first tap or selection. Then ask for a demonstration on the offered machine. Watch whether the cabinet display and reader give consistent prompts and whether the selected item, payment record and physical pickup correspond.

Include a declined payment, an abandoned selection and an unsuccessful delivery in a provider-approved demonstration plan. Record the observed customer message, transaction status and person responsible for resolving the exception. These are proposed acceptance checks, not completed test results. Avoid promising an automatic refund or a release deadline until the provider confirms that behaviour for the configuration.

What to include in a WEIMI enquiry

The WEIMI touchscreen snack and drink listing describes a factory-installed card reader with service provided by the reader company's local office. Its FAQ says the operator needs an account in the card-reader company's system and that withdrawal arrangements depend on local policy. It does not identify VPOS Media 4 or confirm the three scenarios above.

Send WEIMI the destination country, intended products and preferred vending payment flow: tap first, a provider-defined reserve before selection, or select first. Ask the quote to identify the reader, supported sequence, account-activation responsibilities, recurring charges and acceptance demonstration. Confirm availability before treating the desired flow as a supplied feature.
