Smart Vending Fridge Shelf Layout: Capacity Begins with Usable Product Space

Design a shelf plan around package access and validation, then calculate stock.

Two cabinets with similar external dimensions may support very different assortments. Shelf geometry, product access and the identification method determine how much of the interior becomes useful retail space. A capacity figure is only meaningful when its assumptions are visible.

Work backwards from the saleable unit

List each proposed package with its dimensions and the orientation intended for display. Identify products that are easily crushed, unstable when partly depleted or awkward to grasp. Ask the supplier which arrangements are permitted and whether dividers or other configuration elements form part of the proposal.

Refrigeration and identification requirements can constrain placement. Do not fill every apparent gap before checking the instructions for the particular cabinet. An operator should not improvise around vents, cameras or other components.

Draw the full and partly empty shelf

Prepare a shelf map for replenishment, then consider what it looks like after popular items sell. Can the remaining packages stay in their intended positions? Can customers distinguish similar variants? Can staff confirm the arrangement without moving the whole assortment?

Validate the proposed layout with actual samples. Record the approved position and quantity for each product. A diagram is useful for training only when it matches a configuration that has been tested.

Distinguish display capacity from service capacity

The maximum number of packages is not automatically the right replenishment quantity. Product life, demand uncertainty and visit frequency influence the stock that should be loaded. A slower-selling item may need fewer facings even if more would fit physically.

Keep assortment decisions and equipment claims separate. Supplier confirmation establishes what a configuration supports; operating evidence helps determine what a location should stock.
