Reverse Vending Compaction: Separate the Refillable Bottle Route

Confirm which returned containers are compacted and which must reach collection intact.

A reverse vending machine can collect containers for different destinations. A bottle intended for refilling needs a different handling route from a container that will be compacted for recycling. Before comparing storage capacity, confirm what the return programme expects to receive after collection.

Why are returned containers compacted?

In its Inside reverse vending machines article, reviewed on 9 November 2026, TOMRA describes compaction or crushing as a way to reduce container size and devalue redeemed containers. The changed shape and size help prevent those containers from being presented for a second redemption.

That explains two reasons a buyer might specify compaction: managing collected volume and supporting the return programme’s handling process. It does not establish a universal compression ratio, pickup schedule or fraud-prevention guarantee. Ask for the operating details of the offered configuration with your actual container mix.

What changes when the programme includes refillable bottles?

TOMRA says some deposit return systems include refillable plastic and glass containers. Its sorting technology can direct these containers to a separate collection area. For refillable glass, it describes tables or “SoftDrop” areas where bottles are moved separately and gently to avoid breakage.

The purchasing distinction is the required condition of the output. If your collection partner needs bottles intact for a refillable stream, a quotation describing only a compactor leaves that route unresolved. Identify the eligible refillable bottles and ask the supplier to show how each reaches the agreed collection area.

Do not assume all glass must be crushed or that every return programme accepts refillable bottles. Material alone does not define the destination. The programme’s container specification and downstream collection requirements need to agree with the machine configuration.

Check separation and storage together

The same TOMRA article explains that sorting requirements vary between markets. Some systems separate glass, cans, plastic and liquid paperboard; others allow certain materials to share storage. It also distinguishes standalone storage below the infeed from a modular system’s separate backroom.

For your site, request a route drawing that identifies the acceptance point, any compacting stage and the final storage destination for each supported stream. Include the refillable route explicitly. Then confirm the containers, bins or collection areas staff will empty and the access required for that work.

A large combined storage figure is not enough to assess a mixed installation. Ask which part serves each stream and what happens when that destination is full. Any proposed temporary rerouting should be confirmed against the programme’s separation requirements.

What should the supplier demonstrate?

Use an agreed set of eligible containers, including the refillable formats you intend to collect. Follow them through to their actual storage destination. Review the condition of the refillable output with the collection partner and record the configuration demonstrated. Container recognition and reward records remain separate acceptance questions, covered in our reverse vending acceptance guide.

The TOMRA example establishes a documented market approach; it does not confirm WEIMI compaction or refillable-bottle support. Send WEIMI your programme rules, container list, required output condition and available space. Get My Custom Quote and request confirmation of equipment availability and the exact handling scope.
