Vending Meal Deals: Test Bundle Prices, Missing Items and Partial Refunds

Make a drink-and-snack or meal combination understandable before adding promotional pricing to an unattended purchase.

WEIMI INSIGHTS   /   RETAIL PRICING

A simple offer needs precise rules behind it.

Make a drink-and-snack or meal combination understandable before adding promotional pricing to an unattended purchase.

ELIGIBILITY

Which products form the deal.

TOTAL

What the customer pays before confirmation.

EXCEPTION

What happens when one part is unavailable.

THE DECISION IN ONE LINE

Test the complete bundle transaction and its exceptions before promoting a deal; a discount rule alone does not define delivery, stock or refund behaviour.

01   /   BUYER NOTES

Describe the offer in one clear example

Write the promotion as a customer would understand it: the eligible products, required quantities and final price or discount rule. Decide whether substitutions are allowed and whether different sizes qualify. Avoid an offer that needs fine print to explain its ordinary use.

Ask the supplier whether the actual machine supports that rule. A system may allow multiple items without supporting every bundle calculation. Demonstrate the proposed combination rather than assuming a generic shopping-basket feature covers it.

02   /   BUYER NOTES

Check the displayed and charged totals

Select an eligible combination and verify the price before payment, the final charge and the transaction record. Then try a combination that does not qualify. The screen should explain the result clearly so customers do not discover the exclusion only after paying.

Keep the promotion’s start and end conditions explicit. Check time zone, affected machines and any scheduled change. A campaign should not remain active on one cabinet because its software or connection did not receive the update.

03   /   BUYER NOTES

Define what happens when a component is missing

A bundle may depend on several physical selections. Ask how availability is checked and whether a customer can buy the deal when one item is sold out. The interface should not promise a complete offer that the equipment cannot fulfil.

Test an agreed partial-delivery scenario using the supplier’s procedure. Decide how support calculates any refund or replacement, especially when the individual item prices differ from the bundle total. The customer’s record should help explain the outcome rather than leaving staff to invent a value.

04   /   BUYER NOTES

Review whether the deal helps the operation

Track units, revenue, relevant costs and stock availability during the promotion. A higher item count does not automatically mean a better contribution. Consider whether the deal simply discounts purchases customers would already have made.

Watch replenishment and waste as well. A bundle can make one component run out while another remains overstocked. Use the findings to adjust the offer or end it cleanly, then verify that normal prices and descriptions return across the affected machines.

Three transaction scenarios to test

Qualifying purchase

Try: The exact eligible quantities and products.

Check: The displayed total, charged amount and report.

Non-qualifying purchase

Try: A similar but excluded item or quantity.

Check: Clear pricing without an unexpected discount promise.

Unavailable or partial order

Try: An agreed stock or delivery exception.

Check: Customer messaging and the documented refund or replacement method.

PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Questions worth asking before you order

Can every multi-item vending machine run meal deals?

No. Bundle logic depends on the software and integration. Confirm the exact offer with a working demonstration.

Should a partial refund use the normal item price?

Do not assume so. Establish a fair, applicable method for the actual offer and confirm how the system and support process implement it.

Does selling more items prove the deal is successful?

Review contribution, waste and the effect on ordinary purchases as well as volume. Use a defined comparison period.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Bring sample baskets to the pricing demonstration

Prepare qualifying and non-qualifying combinations plus a partial-delivery example. Ask the supplier to show how each appears to the customer and in the operator’s records.
