COLOUR PAIR / TEXT SIZE / DISPLAY STATE
Measure what sits
behind the words.
Separate content contrast from panel brightness and site viewing conditions.
Introduction
A vending screen looks bright in a showroom. The buyer can see the promotional image from across the room, but a pale price label disappears against part of that image. Brightness and text contrast answer different questions. Procurement needs evidence for the foreground and the background immediately behind meaningful text, including the states customers encounter beyond the opening screen.
W3C WAI’s Understanding explanation for WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3, Contrast (Minimum), states a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for text and images of text, with a 3:1 threshold for qualifying large-scale text and specified exceptions. The explanation addresses relative luminance rather than simply choosing two different hues. It also says the thresholds should not be met by rounding a result upward.
This article turns those web-content concepts into a focused purchasing evidence request. It does not certify an entire vending machine or determine a destination market’s legal obligations. The public WEIMI listings establish candidate physical formats, while the interface colour pairs, typography and state behavior require configuration-specific evidence. A site-lighting review remains a separate practical task.
Quick Answer
Ask for a text-state inventory with measured foreground/background pairs. Record the displayed string, software version, state, font size and weight, both colour values, calculated ratio and the applicable threshold. Include meaningful text over promotional images, placeholders, hover or keyboard-focus presentations and enabled controls. An attractive first-screen photograph is insufficient evidence for the rest of the interface.
Keep two acceptance records: the digital contrast measurement and the observed display under intended site conditions. Increasing panel brightness may change the viewing experience, but it does not establish the required ratio between specified content colours. Neither a passing colour pair nor a successful showroom walkthrough proves complete readability in every deployment.
Comparison Table
| Public candidate | Documented format | Text-contrast evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Single-Door AI Vision Smart Fridge for Packaged Drinks | Packaged-product camera-checkout format | Identify which ordered screen or companion interface carries meaningful text |
| WM22 Snacks and Drinks Vending Machine | 21.5-inch touchscreen snack-and-drink format | Measure price, selection, instruction and error text on the actual software |
| Two Cabinets, More Choice: Snack & Drink Vending Station | Main display with a second selling cabinet | Check text identifying each selling area and its associated state |
This is a public-listing procurement shortlist rather than an independent test or measured ranking. No cited page establishes the interface contrast ratios, screen luminance, glare performance or a conformance result. The questions in the final column describe requested evidence, not installed capabilities.
Who Should Buy This
Use this approach when the buyer needs to approve a customer interface rather than just the physical screen. It is particularly relevant if the interface places prices, instructions or status wording over images; changes colours in selected or error states; or allows the operator to upload new promotional backgrounds. Those choices can change the colour pair without changing the cabinet hardware.
A distributor with a branded interface can use the record to separate company identity from functional text. The Understanding explanation says ordinary text is not exempt merely because corporate colour guidelines prescribe it. A specific logo exception should not be stretched into an exemption for the price, checkout wording or instructions around the logo.
A buyer who already has a broad language and touch-flow checklist can add this narrower evidence requirement. The task here is to determine which pair was measured, why a threshold applies and whether changes trigger review. Translation quality, control geometry and recovery behavior need their own observations; they cannot be inferred from a contrast calculation.
How We Evaluate Smart Vending Machines
We reviewed three manufacturer product pages and W3C’s SC 1.4.3 explanation and G18 on 10 October 2026. We did not measure the installed software of these machines, inspect their panel output, or conduct laboratory or site trials. The comparison is an evidence plan for a purchasing team, supported by public sources rather than a report of product performance.
Begin with a list of meaningful text elements and their states. Include a representative product name, price, instructions, enabled action labels, placeholders where used, and text revealed by focus or hover. Record the actual software and content version. A sample theme may be different from the version supplied in the purchase order, so keep the demonstration configuration identifiable.
For solid colours, obtain the foreground and background from the user agent or underlying styles. For text on a variable image or gradient, identify the background directly behind the letters rather than averaging the entire picture. Calculate the relative-luminance ratio, classify the text size and retain the unrounded value for the threshold decision. An image of text requires attention to its actual displayed size as well.
Finish with a planned site observation of the quoted display using representative content and lighting. Record what was observed without relabelling it a WCAG contrast measurement. An interface change, uploaded image or font change should reopen the relevant digital checks, even when the hardware and site conditions remain the same.
Key Buying Factors
The correct threshold. The explanation identifies 18-point regular text or 14-point bold text as qualifying large text, subject to its discussion of fonts and stroke characteristics. A visually prominent heading is not automatically large-scale. Obtain size and weight from the displayed implementation instead of classifying by a screenshot impression. Smaller meaningful text generally needs the 4.5:1 minimum in this criterion.
The immediate background. G18 discusses text over varying or patterned backgrounds and ways of maintaining contrast behind the letters, including changing or shading that area. An image can look dark overall while a bright patch lies beneath one word. Ask for evidence across the actual text area and content states, not a single convenient colour sample from elsewhere in the image.
Unrounded results. W3C explicitly gives 4.499:1 as an example that does not reach 4.5:1. A report may display rounded numbers for readability, but the pass decision must retain enough precision. Choose some design margin rather than relying on a ratio presented as exactly the threshold after rounding.
Style values and rendering. The Understanding explanation recommends foreground and background values from the user agent or styles rather than anti-aliased edge pixels on screen. It also notes that thin or unusual fonts can look fainter in practice despite a nominally passing colour pair. A stronger font or more contrast can therefore be a sensible design choice beyond the threshold calculation.
Exceptions with a recorded reason. Inactive components, decoration and other stated categories have exceptions. Do not mark an enabled but pale action as inactive because it is visually subdued. Likewise, a meaningful image of text does not become incidental simply because it appears in a promotional graphic. Record the functional state and rationale for any exclusion.
Best Smart Vending Machines
These three real manufacturer listings can start a format discussion. Their interface-readability suitability remains unverified until the relevant software and display are evaluated. “Best” here means a candidate for a matching procurement scenario, not a tested contrast winner.
PUBLIC CANDIDATE / 01
Single-Door AI Vision Smart Fridge for Packaged Drinks
The public single-door page describes packaged drinks and compatible snacks, camera checkout, five shelf levels and five baskets, a top screen or lightbox, and optional cooling. The URL wording is not evidence of fresh-juice preparation.
Clarify which ordered presentation carries the customer’s instructions and pricing. A lightbox option and a screen option create different evidence questions. If a supplier proposes a companion digital journey, include that journey in its own text inventory. Camera checkout and cooling say nothing about measured text colours or panel glare.

WM22 Snacks and Drinks Vending Machine
WM22’s public listing describes a 21.5-inch touchscreen, cooling and inventory functions, plus optional spiral, conveyor, direct-push or hanging arrangements. Confirm the ordered mechanism; conflicting generic capacity and energy statements are outside this comparison.
Request the actual touchscreen software with representative product names and prices. Inspect enabled actions, sold-out or other offered states, and explanatory text for the ordered arrangement. The listed screen diagonal does not establish a text size, contrast ratio, brightness rating or outdoor readability.
Review the public listingPUBLIC CANDIDATE / 03
Two Cabinets, More Choice: Snack & Drink Vending Station
The dual-cabinet page presents a main display and a secondary cabinet with visible spiral lanes under a menu and payment arrangement, providing two selling areas. Confirm mapping, capacity, installation and customer routes.
If the quoted interface names or distinguishes selling areas, put that text and its active states in the measurement inventory. Do not infer a shared cart, independent cooling or software architecture from the two-cabinet format. The page does not certify the display’s contrast or its behavior in site lighting.
Review the public listingFeature Comparison
| Review item | Required evidence | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary meaningful text | Actual colour pair and at least 4.5:1 where applicable | Whole-machine accessibility |
| Qualifying large text | Size/weight classification and applicable 3:1 result | Every heading qualifies as large |
| Image or gradient background | Ratio against the background immediately behind text | Average picture colour is enough |
| Changing text state | Separate relevant enabled, focus or hover presentation | Opening screen covers every state |
| Site observation | Quoted display with recorded lighting and content | A digital colour-pair calculation |
Treat each item as a distinct evidence line. The supplier should identify which settings and content the operator can change, and which changes require another review. A downloadable contrast report for a theme cannot cover every future uploaded background unless those content choices are controlled and assessed.
Cost & ROI Analysis
Ask for a scoped quote covering the text inventory, colour-pair review, theme adjustments, variable-background treatment and future content checks. A site display review may need its own line item. Hardware pricing, luminance specifications and maintenance charges must come from current configuration evidence; the public listings do not supply a universal price for this work.
Hypothetical illustration only: assume initial inventory and theme work costs US$1,180 and annual content review costs US$320. First-year incremental cost is US$1,500. Suppose a pilot separately measures avoided support or rework effort worth US$900, US$1,600 or US$2,300 annually. These are calculation assumptions, not observed savings, WEIMI prices or sales forecasts.
| Assumed annual benefit | First-year net after US$1,500 | Illustrative first-year ROI |
|---|---|---|
| US$900 | −US$600 | −40.0% |
| US$1,600 | US$100 | 6.7% |
| US$2,300 | US$800 | 53.3% |
ROI here is net benefit divided by the assumed US$1,500 cost. It excludes machine purchase, payment fees and revenue effects. Replace the values with pilot measurements and avoid attributing every customer difficulty to contrast. If content changes frequently, budget ongoing review rather than assuming that a one-time theme check remains valid indefinitely.
Best Choice by Scenario
For a camera-checkout packaged-product project, investigate the single-door fridge and establish the actual screen, lightbox or companion presentation before defining the text scope. For a touchscreen snack-and-drink project, investigate WM22 and request a versioned screen-state inventory. For a two-area selling project, investigate the dual-cabinet station and inspect wording that connects displayed instructions to the physical selling areas.
When text contrast is the decisive requirement, choose based on the demonstrated colour-pair evidence and an agreed content-control process. A larger or brighter screen is not automatically the better choice. If the evidence is missing, retain the requirement as unresolved and ask for a priced review rather than giving any candidate an unsupported readability ranking.
Applications
A deployment with changing promotions may need background checks whenever text overlays new images. An operator using a branded theme may need functional text colours that fit the identity while meeting the selected threshold. A distributor approving several display configurations may need separate evidence for the content rendered on each configuration. These are proposed applications, not reports of customer installations.
For a pilot, choose representative strings with the actual product names and prices, then inspect both the measured pairs and the quoted display at the intended location. Record software version, content, state and lighting. Keep the two kinds of observation separate so a supplier can resolve a colour problem without confusing it with an unverified panel specification.
FAQ
Does a brighter panel prove adequate text contrast?
No. This criterion concerns relative luminance of text and its immediate background. Panel brightness and site viewing conditions require separate evidence. Neither should be used as a substitute for the other.
Can every heading use the 3:1 threshold?
No. Determine whether the actual text qualifies as large-scale using its displayed size and weight. Prominence or a heading tag alone does not establish that classification.
Can a 4.499:1 value be rounded to a pass?
No. W3C’s explanation says threshold comparisons should not be rounded. Retain the underlying result even if a report presents a shorter display value.
Are brand colours exempt?
Ordinary meaningful text is not exempt simply because corporate identity specifies its colours. The criterion contains a logotype exception, but that is not a blanket exception for surrounding functional text.
Do these product pages verify display contrast?
No. They establish limited public format and hardware facts. Actual software colours, font sizes, state changes and display behavior need a configuration-specific review.
What changes require another review?
Review the affected text pairs when a background image, colour, font, size or relevant state changes. Record who approves operator-uploaded content. A previous theme report cannot automatically cover every later presentation.
Final Recommendation
Request the measured pair, text classification and relevant state before accepting a contrast statement. Include variable backgrounds and operator-editable content in the scope. Preserve the unrounded calculation and document exceptions by function rather than visual appearance. Then inspect the actual quoted display under representative site conditions as a separate practical review.
The three public WEIMI formats provide starting points for equipment discussions. None has a verified contrast advantage in this article. Select a format that fits the operational project and make its actual interface evidence part of the quotation. Assign ongoing review responsibility so that new content does not silently invalidate an earlier approval.
