Before You Cross Out the Price: A Vending Promotion Needs a History

Build a defensible savings claim with item, channel and sales records before designing the discount banner

WEIMI / RETAIL EVIDENCE / PROMOTION EDITION

Before you cross out
the price,
open the history.

An editorial buying guide to the evidence behind a saving—not a claim that a screen can certify it.

UK advertising context • Public sources reviewed 8 October 2026

Introduction

A vending screen showing “Was £4.00, now £3.00” does more than announce today’s price. It tells the shopper something about the earlier price. The percentage calculation can be correct while the history behind it is weak. For a fleet buyer, that distinction changes the software brief: the project needs access to evidence about the advertised comparison, not merely a field where someone can type a larger number.

The UK CAP Executive’s Promotional savings claims guidance displays an update date of 6 October 2026. We read it on 8 October 2026. It addresses genuine usual selling prices, price history, sales data, channels, recommended retail prices and introductory offers. CAP states that this non-broadcast advertising advice is not legal advice and does not bind CAP or the ASA. It is a useful evidence framework; it is not a product-specific approval for a vending promotion.

This article applies that framework to procurement and operator records. It is distinct from choosing inputs for automated or personalized prices. A simple manually applied markdown can still make an unsupported savings claim. Global buyers should verify local rules and advertising scope for the actual deployment; UK guidance should not be presented as a universal legal standard.

Quick Answer

THE CLAIM

What does “save” compare?

THE RECORD

Where was that price charged?

THE DISPLAY

Does this item receive the offer?

If the evidence is missing, do not manufacture a selling history by setting a high price briefly. An accurate current price without an unsupported comparison is easier to review. For a genuinely new offer, ask the reviewer whether clearly described introductory wording is appropriate instead of implying a past price.

Comparison Table

Offer wording What the shopper may understand Evidence question
“Was £4, now £3” A reduction from an established usual selling price Which item, channel, dates and sales support £4?
“Save 25%” An implied comparison even without a crossed-out price What is the comparison basis and is it supported?
“Below RRP” A saving against a meaningful market reference Does the recommended figure reflect general selling prices?
“Introductory price” A new-product opening offer Are its nature, end and intended later price clear?
“Up to 30% off” A range-level promotion Do eligible goods and discount distribution support the overall message?

These are interpretation and evidence questions, not ready-made compliant slogans. CAP discusses these claim categories with qualifications and examples. A spreadsheet formula alone cannot answer them.

Who Should Buy This

Use this guide when buying equipment or cloud services for a fleet that will advertise discounts on a screen, shelf label, cabinet wrap or linked campaign page. It is relevant to centralized retail teams that set offers for multiple operators and to distributors whose customers expect promotional display features. Clarify who owns the advertising claim as well as who enters the price.

A supplier’s screen demonstration may show an attractive sale banner without the historical evidence needed to support it. Ask whether the software stores price changes, exports relevant transactions and preserves item identity after packaging revisions. If the platform does not retain the needed history, decide how the operator will keep reliable records outside it. Do not describe an absent reporting field as available.

This is not a reason to select the largest touchscreen by default. A browsable fridge, a selection-and-dispense cabinet and a dry-goods elevator format have different shopping journeys. First select the journey for the merchandise; separately confirm the offer display and evidence arrangement.

How We Evaluate Smart Vending Machines

The shortlist uses public WEIMI listings and proposed procurement checks. We have not independently tested the machines, audited their promotion modules or reviewed a live operator’s claim. “Best” means a format worth considering for a stated assortment. It does not mean a machine has been certified to validate discounts.

Build a supplier-supervised demonstration using dummy merchandise and clearly labeled synthetic price records. Keep demonstration values separate from real advertising evidence. The demonstration can show whether the system displays and applies an approved rule; it cannot establish that a fictional old price was a genuine usual selling price.

Demonstration case Observe Retain
One item has an approved comparison Display and charged amount agree Item identifier, claim wording and configuration
An excluded item is visible nearby Generic banner does not imply its eligibility Screen evidence and exclusions
A new pack replaces an old SKU History is not silently merged into a false comparison Mapping decision and revision
A coupon does not apply to the discounted item The coupon message does not imply it does Conditions and item-page layout
The campaign ends Old savings artwork and actual prices are reviewed together End action, owner and evidence

A successful display trial does not validate the advertising claim or predict more sales. Mark missing functions and unanswered evidence questions explicitly. Ask which components are included in the quote, supplied by a third party or handled manually.

Key Buying Factors

History beyond the immediately preceding price. CAP says it expects at least three months of pricing history, including intervening prices, when assessing usual selling price. This is a described UK advertising-evidence expectation, not a universal vending software retention law or a guaranteed safe harbor. A longer archive may still be relevant to the particular claim. Obtain advice for the intended campaign.

Item and offer identity. Record size, quantity, pack version and channel. A smaller pack should not inherit a larger pack’s price comparison without an appropriate basis. Keep the relationship between product identifiers visible when suppliers revise packaging. A recognition model identifying the correct product is separate from a marketer substantiating its claimed saving.

Recency, duration and actual sales. CAP considers how recently the reference price was charged, how long it applied, pricing patterns and sales data. A higher number repeatedly alternated with a discount may not be the genuine usual price. Do not turn any example in a ruling into a mechanical number of days that guarantees approval.

Channel and outlet scope. The guidance considers where the advertisement appeared and where the goods were sold at the higher price. A price used elsewhere in the business does not automatically support the same claim for this vending channel. Identify the scope reviewed, including materially different outlets, rather than pooling a convenient high price from a few cabinets into a fleet-wide assertion.

Responsibility and review. CAP notes that marketers remain responsible for advertised prices even when third-party sellers set them or an error occurs. Define the operator’s approval owner and correction route. A service contract saying the software can change prices does not establish who has reviewed the saving claim.

Best Smart Vending Machines

The following three products are real supplier listings. Their retail formats help organize a demonstration brief, but none establishes price-history exports, automatic claim validation or a specific promotion function.

01

Defined packaged refreshment range

WEIMI WM22 Touchscreen Snacks & Drinks Machine

The WM22 listing describes a 21.5-inch touchscreen, cooling and adjustable slot options including spiral, belt, pusher and hanging arrangements.

Shortlist this cabinet when the approved refreshments suit the quoted dispensing arrangement. Link each offer to the correct channel and finished pack, then check how its display and transaction amount change. Confirm included slot types and local payments separately. A touchscreen listing does not prove a historical-price ledger or savings banner is supported.

02

Browsable chilled assortment

WEIMI Single-Door AI Vision Smart Fridge

Direct selection of compatible packaged drinks and snacks; camera-based checkout and cloud management are described on the product page.

Shortlist the fridge where direct selection of compatible chilled packages suits the location. Ask how price information is visible before selection and which records distinguish individual packs and completed baskets. A shopper may choose several items, so range-level artwork should not imply every item receives the maximum saving. Camera checkout is not advertising substantiation.

03

Compatible boxed dry goods

WEIMI 32-Inch Toy Vending Machine with Elevator Pickup

The listing shows a 32-inch touchscreen, pusher slots, elevator pickup and a non-refrigerated configuration.

Shortlist this non-refrigerated model for tested boxes and dry products. The listing describes a 32-inch screen, pusher slots and elevator pickup. A campaign image must refer to the actual eligible offer; screen space does not justify displaying excluded products beneath a broad discount. Confirm rights to sell the goods, packaging fit and payments.

Feature Comparison

Procurement item Public listing evidence Separate confirmation
WM22 selection path Screen and configurable dispensing arrangements Price changes, item mapping and available exports
AI fridge basket path Camera checkout and cloud management described Line-item information and basket evidence
Toy machine display and pickup 32-inch screen and elevator described Campaign assets and eligible-item display
Usual-price substantiation No machine listing establishes it Operator history, sales and reviewer decision
RRP or introductory wording No machine listing establishes it Claim basis, scope and campaign review

Avoid marking an entire promotion column “yes” because the product has cloud management. Break it into artwork control, actual charging behavior and evidence retrieval. A manual archive may be a realistic solution for some projects, but document its workload and how the record stays accurate.

Cost & ROI Analysis

Budget for a defensible campaign process as well as the hardware. Obtain actual software and integration quotations; record internal work to prepare the item list, gather price and sales history, review the claim and check deployed artwork. No supplier fees or sales increases are verified here.

Suppose a separately assumed incremental contribution is £0.75 per additional sale after merchandise and payment costs. Recovering £225 of campaign administration alone would require 300 additional sales: £225 ÷ £0.75. Those are hypothetical inputs, not an expected uplift. They exclude site costs, refill work, tax and other overhead. A valid savings claim is still necessary if no additional sales occur.

Evaluate actual campaign contribution against an appropriate baseline and record uncertainties. More purchases in a busy week do not establish that the banner caused them. Keep claim substantiation separate from commercial results: evidence that an old price was genuine does not prove a promotion is profitable.

Best Choice by Scenario

Buyer situation Equipment direction Evidence decision
Defined snack channels Review WM22 with the actual packs Match each claim to channel, item and history
Mixed chilled baskets Review AI fridge if direct selection fits Show eligible goods without overstating basket savings
Boxed gift campaign Review toy elevator format Match depicted boxes to qualifying offers
New item without selling history Choose format for the goods Review introductory wording rather than inventing a past price
Cloud cannot export old prices Assess equipment and service separately Confirm a reliable alternative archive or narrow the claim

The hardware recommendation stays conditional on its tested assortment and local configuration. If evidence is incomplete, revising the marketing claim may be more appropriate than adding a more elaborate display module.

Applications

Build a campaign ledger. Use one row per item and advertised claim: identifier, finished offer, cabinet or channel scope, comparison basis, effective prices and dates, sales evidence, review owner and deployed artwork. These are suggested record fields, not verified CMS functions. Link the documents so a screenshot is not separated from the evidence behind it.

Review “up to” artwork. Check the range represented, distribution of savings and products pictured. CAP discusses significant proportions and the overall picture on a case-by-case basis. Do not turn a percentage mentioned in the guidance into a universal automatic pass. Confirm the claim with the responsible reviewer and keep its eligible-item list current.

Separate RRP from your own previous price. A manufacturer recommendation alone is not sufficient under the cited guidance to show the general market selling price. Ask what comparison the headline actually makes and obtain the corresponding evidence. Do not relabel a supplier list price as “was” simply because it is larger than the vending price.

Close the campaign. Record what changed at the end: artwork, active prices, eligibility messages and evidence archive. For questions about which inputs change the charged price, use the scheduled versus personalized pricing guide. This article concerns the history and comparison communicated by the savings claim, rather than the pricing engine’s personal-data inputs.

FAQ

Does correct percentage arithmetic prove the saving is genuine?
No. It calculates a difference between two numbers. The comparison price still needs a valid basis and the item, channel and relevant history must match the advertised message.
Is a manufacturer RRP enough?
The cited CAP guidance says a recommendation alone is not sufficient to establish the general selling price. Review actual market evidence and the proposed claim rather than assuming the supplier’s figure settles it.
Can a new product use a crossed-out future price?
CAP cautions that this can imply an established usual selling price unless the intended future price is made explicitly clear. Ask the reviewer about introductory wording, timing and the intended later price.
Does three months of records guarantee acceptance?
No. CAP describes an expectation for pricing history, not a safe harbor. Recency, duration, patterns, sales, channel and presentation still matter. Global markets need their own review.
Does cloud management mean a promotion archive is included?
No such feature is established by these listings. Request the exact scope, available fields, export behavior and retention arrangement from the service supplier.
Can one banner appear beside an excluded item?
The overall impression matters. CAP warns against displaying discount offers on product pages where they cannot be used. Review your actual vending layout so eligibility is not falsely implied.

Final Recommendation

Choose the vending format for the goods, then approve the savings claim using an explicit evidence record. Ask the software supplier to demonstrate the accepted offer’s display and charging behavior. Keep a missing history or unsupported RRP comparison open rather than closing it with a visually convincing banner.

The useful purchase deliverable is a linked set of records: eligible items, claim basis, historical evidence, reviewer decision, deployed wording and end action. It helps the operator distinguish an implementation error from an unsupported marketing comparison. It does not certify the campaign or promise revenue.

Evidence boundary: the UK CAP Executive guidance displayed 6 October 2026 supplies the advertising context. It is non-binding advice and not legal advice. Public WEIMI listings supply the format descriptions. No machine promotion archive, independent testing, compliant campaign, sales uplift, search volume or Google indexing is established here.
