Choose the objective before choosing a battery

Backup power can serve different purposes: preserving a controlled shutdown, keeping communication available, maintaining refrigeration or continuing customer purchases. These objectives require different assessments. A small backup device supporting one subsystem should not be described as powering the complete vending operation.

Write the desired outcome in ordinary language. For example, the project may need enough time for the controller to complete an approved shutdown process rather than continuous sales. Another operation may have product-storage requirements that need a separate resilience plan. Keep those objectives distinct.

Collect the actual equipment information

Provide the qualified electrical designer with the machine configuration and relevant manufacturer specifications. Include connected cabinets, payment equipment and accessories. Do not use a generic catalogue consumption figure as the only basis for power design.

The specialist needs to assess the loads and operating characteristics relevant to the selected arrangement, including any requirements associated with refrigeration, heating or motors. This article intentionally supplies no wiring instructions, sizing formula or universal power rating.

Confirm what the equipment manufacturer permits. An unsuitable supply arrangement can create technical or safety problems even if the screen appears to turn on. Use documented compatibility and installation requirements for the proposed system.

Separate energy use from power-system suitability

A daily energy-use figure can help estimate operating costs under stated conditions, but it does not alone establish the requirements for a UPS or generator. The electrical design must account for the actual equipment and intended operating states.

Likewise, a battery label does not establish usable runtime for the whole machine. Runtime depends on the supported loads, system characteristics and conditions. Request a specialist assessment and relevant test evidence rather than multiplying marketing numbers into an unverified guarantee.

Keep any planning assumptions visible. If the design has not yet been validated with the proposed configuration, describe the estimate as provisional. Do not publish it as a measured WEIMI performance claim.

Decide what customers see during a supply interruption

The machine may retain some functions while others become unavailable. Define whether it should accept new purchases, finish an active transaction or move to an out-of-service state under the approved design. This behaviour must be supported by the actual controls and payment workflow.

A powered payment terminal does not prove that the dispensing mechanism or product-storage system is ready. Coordinate availability decisions across the relevant systems so customers are not encouraged to start a transaction that cannot complete.

Use clear messages that match the actual status. Avoid promising a recovery time unless the operation can support it. Provide the established support route for unresolved transactions without asking customers to repeatedly pay.

Plan the return to normal power

Restoration is another operating state to review. Ask the supplier how the machine resumes service and which checks the operator must perform. Follow the documented sequence; do not improvise repeated restarts or bypass protective controls.

For temperature-sensitive products, the responsible operator must use the approved monitoring and product-handling procedure before deciding what remains suitable for sale. Backup equipment operation alone does not prove that every product stayed within its required conditions.

Record any transaction exceptions created during the interruption and reconcile them through the supported systems. A normal-looking home screen after restart does not resolve an earlier uncertain payment or delivery.

Validate the plan under controlled conditions

Have qualified personnel agree and supervise the relevant tests. The acceptance plan should identify the functions being supported, test conditions, observed duration and limitations. Do not create uncontrolled power faults on a live site to see what happens.

Test the customer-facing behaviour and operational handover as well as the electrical arrangement. Staff should know which functions remain available, who receives alerts and when to escalate. A technical design without a practical response procedure is incomplete.

Maintain the backup system according to its instructions and retain the records with the vending equipment file. If the machine configuration or site arrangement changes, have the design reviewed. Adding a second cabinet can change the requirement even when the original machine remains the same.
