WEIMI / DATA DELIVERY CONTRACT
The Export Was a Stock List. Why Did the Spreadsheet Treat a Name as a Formula? Vending CSV Procurement
Separate spreadsheet viewing from data interchange and specify how untrusted text survives the complete export workflow.
Source value → Exported field → Parsed cell → Supported consumer
Introduction
A hypothetical route manager downloads a stock list and opens it in a spreadsheet. One imported description is treated as a calculation rather than the literal text held in the source system. The file may have the expected columns and row count while crossing a different boundary: data becomes an instruction to the spreadsheet application.
OWASP describes this issue as CSV injection or formula injection. Its public guidance explains that untrusted content embedded in an export can be interpreted as a formula by spreadsheet software. The buyer’s question is therefore broader than “Does the cloud system export CSV?” It includes which text reaches the file, how fields become cells and what the receiving application does with them.
This procurement guide proposes an export acceptance scope. It does not report a vulnerability in WEIMI equipment, claim a tested security ranking or provide an exploitation procedure. The three public listings below establish retail formats; they do not establish a particular CSV implementation or its protections.
Quick Answer
Specify the receiving workflow before choosing an export treatment. A file intended for a person to view in Excel and a file intended for programmatic import may need different contracts. Do not label one transformation safe for every consumer.
Request evidence from the final exported cells in named, supported applications. Include ordinary text, formula-like text, separators and quotes, then repeat the agreed save-and-reopen path. OWASP warns that Excel may remove quoting or escape characters during that path, so an initially reassuring display is incomplete evidence.
Keep the underlying source value and document any transformation made for the viewing export. OWASP also notes that a tab-based treatment described for Excel changes the underlying cell data and may affect later programmatic processing. Procurement should make that trade-off visible rather than allowing a viewing file to become an undocumented integration feed.
Comparison Table
| Delivery workflow |
Buyer’s main question |
Acceptance evidence |
| Human spreadsheet viewing |
Does text remain text in the supported application? |
Export, open and the agreed save/reopen result. |
| Machine-to-machine import |
Are values and types preserved as agreed? |
Parsed records compared with the source fixture. |
| Viewing then reimport |
Does a protective transformation alter downstream values? |
Documented transformation and explicit import policy. |
| Several applications or locales |
Does behavior vary across the supported set? |
Separate results for each agreed application and locale. |
| Quoted CSV fields |
Are cell boundaries correct and text interpretation addressed? |
Parsing evidence plus receiving-application behavior. |
CSV syntax and spreadsheet interpretation are separate concerns. Correct field quoting can keep a comma within a value yet does not, by itself, prove that the receiving software will treat every resulting cell as literal text.
Who Should Buy This
Include this scope when a supplier offers downloadable stock, sales, route, product or maintenance records that staff open in spreadsheet software. Begin with an inventory of the exports actually included in the quote. A touchscreen and cloud management description cannot establish that a particular download exists.
The relevant text may come from internal staff, suppliers or another system. Product descriptions, location names and comments are hypothetical examples, not confirmed fields in any WEIMI application. Ask which sources can populate the offered export and what trust assumptions the supplier makes about those values.
Operations, integration and security representatives should agree the intended consumers. An operator may want a convenient spreadsheet, while an accounting integration needs unchanged identifiers. Resolve that difference before acceptance so that a protective display transformation does not silently change a business key.
How We Evaluate Smart Vending Machines
We shortlist three WEIMI formats from public product evidence reviewed on 10 October 2026 and use OWASP’s public guidance reviewed on 11 October 2026 for the export review. We have not independently inspected their export code or opened supplied production CSV files. Listed equipment features and proposed software evidence remain separate.
Build an agreed synthetic fixture with harmless values, not real customer information or attack content. Include a simple formula-like arithmetic string whose expected result is literal text, together with ordinary punctuation, quoted text and separators. The test team should define the fixture and expected treatment before opening it in a controlled environment.
Trace the source value to the serialized field, the parsed cell and the receiving application. Retain application version, locale, delimiter, import/open method and output mode. A supplier showing one cell in one application establishes a scoped observation, not support for every spreadsheet program.
Repeat the user’s normal lifecycle: download, open, save and reopen where that sequence is in scope. OWASP explicitly describes the risk of escaping being lost during Excel save/reopen. Include any approved subsequent import as a separate check. Do not assume that a file remains suitable for integration because it looked correct on first opening.
Key Buying Factors
Map the untrusted fields. Ask the supplier to identify every exported field that can contain supplied text. Record who can create or change it and whether it is copied from another service. Authentication to the vending dashboard does not make every stored string safe for a spreadsheet to interpret as an instruction.
Check the final cell boundary. OWASP highlights field separators and quotes because text can change the resulting cell structure. Review how the exporter handles embedded punctuation and line breaks. A check of only the first character in the original source string cannot establish the first character of every parsed output cell.
Do not equate quoting with literal data. Quoting and escaping address serialization, while spreadsheet interpretation depends on the consumer. Require the vendor to explain both. The public guidance identifies several formula-initiating characters and locale-related variants; the agreed supported environment should determine the full fixture scope.
Verify the round trip. A display screenshot taken before saving may miss a later change in interpretation. Request a save/reopen observation under the supported workflow. If the supplier supports only a defined import mode, document that limit and the actual user steps rather than advertising unrestricted double-click compatibility.
Disclose changed values. OWASP’s Excel-focused tab-prefix mitigation comes with a data trade-off and an application boundary. We do not prescribe it as a universal repair. If an offered viewing export adds characters, define which values are transformed and how that file is labelled and kept apart from integration input.
Make exceptions actionable. A failed fixture should produce a documented limitation, remediation or revised delivery contract. The response should not depend on staff ignoring a security prompt. Keep who owns the exporter, who approves consumer support and who repeats verification after a change in the acceptance record.
Preserve useful data. Removing every punctuation character could damage legitimate names or identifiers. Require a considered, tested approach that meets the agreed security and data-fidelity requirements. A claim that “special characters are blocked” is incomplete without knowing where the block applies and what valid business values it rejects.
Best Smart Vending Machines
These three real listings form a manufacturer-specific procurement shortlist. “Best” means a candidate for a retail workflow and a request for the corresponding software evidence. It is not an independently tested security comparison.
SHORTLIST 1 / EXPORT QUESTIONS TO CONFIRM
Single-Door AI Vision Smart Fridge for Packaged Drinks
The public single-door AI vision fridge listing describes camera-based checkout, five shelf levels with five baskets and a top screen or lightbox option. Confirm the ordered cooling and merchandising configuration. It retails packaged products; it does not prepare fresh juice.
If a quoted cloud package offers a stock download, request its actual field inventory and supported spreadsheet path. Camera checkout does not prove export sanitization or the presence of any particular downloadable report.

SHORTLIST 2 / EXPORT QUESTIONS TO CONFIRM
WM22 Snacks and Drinks Vending Machine
WM22 is publicly described with a 21.5-inch touchscreen, inventory functions and cooling, with optional spiral, conveyor, direct-push and hanging arrangements to confirm in the order.
For an offered route or product export, demonstrate literal handling of operator-supplied text and intact channel references. Do not infer a file format, API or export protection from the inventory feature alone.

SHORTLIST 3 / EXPORT QUESTIONS TO CONFIRM
Two Cabinets, More Choice: Snack & Drink Vending Station
The dual-cabinet public listing presents a main display and an additional visible spiral area for snack-and-drink retail. The exact layout, mechanisms and installation plan need confirmation.
If reporting spans both stock areas, first verify the actual identifiers and fields, then apply the agreed consumer checks. This comparison does not establish shared checkout architecture, independent cooling, export availability or a security control.

An equipment choice should remain compatible with the intended assortment and service plan. Export evidence is an additional purchasing requirement, not proof that a different retail format is commercially or mechanically suitable.
Cost & ROI Analysis
This example uses hypothetical USD labour assumptions only. It is not a WEIMI quote, a measured security benefit or a prediction of loss avoided. Treat exporter review as a distinct software acceptance activity within the wider equipment project.
| Assumed work |
Arithmetic |
Illustrative budget |
| Field and consumer register |
7 hours × $95 |
$665 |
| Fixture and lifecycle review |
11 hours × $95 |
$1,045 |
| Documentation and follow-up |
6 hours × $95 |
$570 |
| Total planned review |
24 hours × $95 |
$2,280 |
Suppose an alternative late correction would require 22 hours at $120 plus $450 in coordination expenses. That hypothetical total is $3,090, or $810 above the planned review. The comparison does not prove that every project will require late correction or that this review prevents an incident.
At an assumed $40 net contribution per additional sale, recovering a $2,280 review budget would require 57 additional sales. No additional sales are forecast here. A real ROI decision needs actual operating margins, software charges, implementation effort and measured rework. Do not convert a security guidance page into a quantified revenue or risk-reduction claim.
Best Choice by Scenario
Direct-access retail: investigate the AI vision fridge for compatible packaged products and the approved configuration. If staff view exported inventory, make the named spreadsheet workflow part of the software acceptance brief.
Channel-based vending: investigate WM22 when the chosen pack and mechanism fit. Add export cases that preserve channel and product references while keeping supplied descriptions literal. This is a proposed acceptance case, not a confirmed WM22 function.
Expanded snack-and-drink footprint: investigate the dual-cabinet format when its servicing and installation requirements suit the site. Where an offered export covers both areas, retain clear identifiers and verify the same supported consumer contract across the complete file.
For every format, an exporter that serves both people and integrations needs explicit output modes or an equally clear agreed contract. A supplier’s explanation should identify the limitations before the purchase decision, rather than leaving staff to discover them in an accounting import.
Applications
A route team can use a controlled viewing export to review a hypothetical stock list in its supported spreadsheet application. Acceptance should cover ordinary text and harmless formula-like fixtures through the same opening method that staff will use. Keep production data out of the rehearsal.
An integrator can assess a separate interchange file against its field map. Compare values after parsing rather than judging a screenshot. A viewing protection that inserts a character can matter to matching or validation even if the cell looks readable to a person.
A software upgrade or newly supported locale can trigger targeted repeat evidence. Review whether serialization, cell interpretation or save/reopen behavior changed. These applications are proposed purchasing workflows; no installed customer outcome is asserted.
FAQ
Is a correctly quoted CSV necessarily safe to open?
No universal conclusion follows. Quoting controls field boundaries, but receiving software can still interpret a resulting cell as a formula. Request evidence for the agreed consumer workflow.
Does OWASP provide one strategy safe for all consumers?
No. Its guidance explicitly states that there is no universal sanitization strategy for every spreadsheet application and downstream consumer. Scope the treatment and its trade-offs.
Why check saving and reopening?
OWASP warns that Excel may remove quotes or escapes during this lifecycle. The initial display alone does not demonstrate what a reopened file will do.
Should viewing and integration exports be identical?
Only if the agreed evidence supports both uses. Protective viewing transformations may alter underlying values. Define the intended use and import policy instead of assuming interchangeability.
Have these three WEIMI exporters been tested here?
No. Public product listings support a retail-format shortlist. Export availability, implementation and supported applications require evidence from the quoted software package.
What evidence should the supplier retain?
The synthetic source fixture, serialized export, expected cell/value treatment, application versions, locale, workflow steps, results and known limitations. Record who repeats the review after relevant changes.
Final Recommendation
Ask for an export contract that names its consumers and demonstrates its lifecycle. Retain source-to-cell evidence, supported application boundaries and any transformation of the underlying value. Treat viewing and downstream data processing as distinct requirements where their needs differ.
Read OWASP’s CSV Injection guidance for the technical background and its application-specific caveats. OWASP does not endorse the products in this shortlist. The guidance explains a risk class; it does not establish a vulnerability, mitigation or certification for any quoted WEIMI build.
